Today (19. August 2014) is World Orangutan Day and Walter from Dortmund Zoo says: its a wonderful day :o).
Chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans have been living for hundreds of thousands of years in their forest, living fantastic lives, never overpopulating, never destroying the forest. I would say that they have been in a way more successful than us as far as being in harmony with the environment (Jane Goodall).
Orangutans (Pongo) are facing extinction due to the unsustainable production of palm oil – an ingredient found in many packaged supermarket products. Estimated less than 40,000 remain in the wild. Orangutans are born with an ability to reason and think. This large, gentle red ape is one of humankind’s closest relatives, sharing 97% of the same DNA.
